This calculator estimates an emergency savings target, the amount still to save, your current months of coverage, and the time needed to close the gap. You provide monthly essential expenses, savings already set aside, a coverage goal, and a monthly contribution.
The estimate holds expenses and contributions constant. It excludes interest, withdrawals, inflation, and unexpected costs. The starting values are examples; three months is an editable goal, not a recommendation for every household. Results are estimates, not guarantees.
Your savings goal is the essential spending you choose to cover. Still to save subtracts your existing reserve. Current coverage shows approximately how many months your savings could cover at today’s spending level.
Time to reach your goal assumes you keep making the same monthly contribution. Try a different goal or contribution to compare the tradeoff. Revisit your plan when expenses, income stability, or household responsibilities change.
Savings goal = monthly essential expenses × months of coverage.
Remaining gap = the greater of (savings goal − current savings) and zero.
Current coverage = current savings ÷ monthly essential expenses.
Time to goal = remaining gap ÷ monthly contribution, rounded up to a whole month.
Money inputs and the target round to cents. Current coverage rounds to one decimal place. A goal already met returns zero months. With a remaining gap and no monthly contribution, the timeline is unavailable. Blank or invalid inputs clear the results until corrected.
The tool models future monthly contributions after today. It does not model deposit dates, earnings on savings, taxes, or changes in purchasing power.

Why Legacy Tools?
Financial decisions get harder when the assumptions are hidden. Legacy Tools are designed to make the numbers easier to see, test, and understand. Change the assumptions, compare scenarios, and use the results as a starting point for better questions.
We explain the assumptions behind the numbers.
Our tools are built around real household and financial decisions.
The goal is understanding—not telling you what you must buy or do.
